A brief history of the Mutuo

Founded in 1906, The Societa' di Mutuo Soccorso of Barre has a long and rich history of Italian culture in Central Vermont. At the turn of the 20th Century, in order to aid the transition to a new country, Italian immigrants formed the mutual aid societies throughout the United States.

Our society, commonly called 'The Mutuo', had at one time a purpose of bringing not only healthcare, insurance and assistance to injured or deceased members and their families, but also a very important social aspect with meals and dances. This social tradition continues to this day with The Club holding many functions such as weekly meals, fellowships and gatherings. We also take great pride in awarding generous scholarships to graduates of local schools and also contributing to local charities.

Welcome to our Mutuo! Benvenuti!
